AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts swimming and diving takes on Boston University on Saturday, November 4, at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. Diving events begin at 11 a.m., with swim competition starting at 1 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
The women's team dropped its dual meet against Yale, 163-126, last Saturday, in Amherst, while the men's team held an exhibition against the Bulldogs.
 
The Minutewomen registered 21 top-three finishes, with 18 individual event wins. Senior Megan Mitchell sat atop the podium for UMass in the 200 backstroke, after swimming a time of 2:04.12.
 
On the first day of competition, the women's team won two individual events and tallied nine top-three marks, while the men's team garnered four top-three finishes.
 
Fast Freshmen
Freshmen Diya Ackerman-Vallala, Lindsay Burbage and Beren Cakiroglu for the Minutewomen have placed first in multiple individual events on the season, so far, and recorded several season- and personal-bests. Ackerman-Vallala claimed the gold twice in the 400 individual medley, swimming a season-best time of 4:38.04 at the NJIT Invite. She also swam a season-best time of 25.07 in the 50 freestyle leg as the leadoff in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 1650 freestyle, she recorded a personal-best time of 18:14.68, finishing fifth in the event against Yale.
 
Burbage took first in the 100 breaststroke, twice, and in the 200 breaststroke. At the NJIT Invite, she added a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at the event with a season-best time of 2:26.11. Against Yale, she took second in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a season-best time of 1:05.01.
 
Cakiroglu, earning two first-place finishes, this year, swam a season-best time of 1:54.45 in the 200 freestyle, while swimming a top time of 53.33 in the 100 freestyle at the Colgate Invite. She also collected a personal-best time of 24.37 in the 50 freestyle as the relay leadoff in the 200 freestyle relay and earned an individual personal-best time of 24.39 in the 50 freestyle event alone at the NJIT Invitational. Cakiroglu completed the 100 freestyle at the NJIT Invite with a time of 53.01, marking a personal-best, to claim the silver.

For the Minutemen, Jude Boukarroum has totaled two season-best times, all at the NJIT Invite. He finished 19th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.83, while completing the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.18 for a sixth-place finish. He added a fourth-place finish in the mile with a season-best time of 16:53.74 to qualify for the CSCAA National Invitational Championship, taking place in March 2024.
 
Additionally, Aydin Erkan placed first in the 200 butterfly at the NJIT Invite with a season-best time of 1:55.40. Erkan also punched in a qualifying time for the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in the 1650 freestyle. He posted a time of 16:52.70 to claim third in the event against Yale.
 
Diving In
On the boards, sophomores Salem Howes and Shreeya Sinha have competed for the Minutewomen. Howes recorded personal-bests in both the one-meter and three-meter dive, scoring a 237.98 and a 231.45, respectively, against Yale. Sinha dove for the first time this season in the dual meet against Yale, scoring 169.43 in the one-meter dive and 174.53 in the three-meter dive.
 
For the Minutemen, sophomore Andrew Bell competed for the first time this season versus Yale, recording qualifying scores for the NCAA Division I Men's Championships for March 2024, in both the one-meter and three-meter. In the one-meter, he totaled a score of 333.30, while tallying a score of 360.45 in the three-meter, to claim first in both events. Zak Teffahi joined Bell on the boards, scoring 167.33 in the one-meter and 170.85 in the three-meter dive.
 
Weekly Honors
Two members of the women's swimming and diving team tabbed Atlantic 10 weekly awards, as senior Bri Williams was named the A-10 co-Performer of the Week, while Cakiroglu was selected the A-10 Rookie of the Week. It marked the first weekly honors for both Williams and Cakiroglu in their careers.
 
Williams earned the accolade after finishing first in both the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke, swimming a time of 58.03 and 2:06.23, respectively. She also aided the 400 medley relay team to gold with a time of 3:54.59, swimming a 58.01 time in her leg of the race, while helping the 400 free relay team to a silver medal with a time of 3:35.69.
 
Cakiroglu captured two first-place finishes in her collegiate debut, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:54.45 and the 100 free with a time of 53.33 to garner the award. She also placed fourth in the 50 free, completing the event with a time of 24.70. Cakiroglu assisted the 400 medley relay team to a silver medal (3:56.67), while helping the 400 free relay team to a bronze medal (3:38.20).
 
Additionally, Sammy Quigg of the men's swimming and diving team was named one of the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week. He placed first in three individual events. In the 200 free, he finished with a time of 1:41.98 to claim first, and recorded a time of 21.20 in the 50 free to sit atop the podium. He also took the gold in the 100 free with a time of 45.25. Quigg also earned a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, swimming a time of 52.73, and helped the 400 medley relay team to first-place finish with a time of 3:28.80. 
 
Next Up
UMass will take a break next week, before jumping back into the pool for the Terrier Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts. The event will take place on Friday, November 17, through Sunday, November 19, with events beginning at 10 a.m.
