Minutewomen Drop Double Overtime Affair With Saint Joseph's

Amherst, Mass. -- The Minutewomen (7-6, 2-2) fell in a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime contest against Saint Joseph's (10-3, 4-0) on Friday afternoon at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The overtime contest marked back-to-back overtime affairs for Massachusetts at Gladchuk Field. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen once again anchored a superb defensive effort from Massachusetts, recording six saves across all 71 minutes. The Huizen, The Netherlands native has recorded 5-plus saves in five straight games and six overall this season.  

The Minutewomen continued to excel in defensive penalty corner execution, not allowing a single goal despite 11 penalty corner attempts from Saint Joseph's.  

Junior Dempsey Campbell scored the equalizer for the Minutewomen, marking her third goal of the season. The Saunderstown, Rhode Island native leads the team in total shots (22) and sits second in shots on goal (11) this season.  

Yale was led by senior Lily Santi who netted her eighth goal of the season in the overtime victory. 

What Coach Weinberg had to say 

"I think our team played very well against Saint Joseph's, especially in the second half," said Coach Weinberg. "We really controlled the game and had the confidence to go forward, find each other in the pockets and in overloading." 

Breaking Down The Action 

  • The first period of play ended in a 0-0 deadlock after a well-timed defensive save from graduate student Josie Rossback kept the Hawks off the board. 
  • Saint Joseph's tallied the game's first goal as Alison Buffington made it 1-0 with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter. 
  • Massachusetts turned enhanced offensive pressure into an equalizer as Dempsey Campbell redirected a shot from Emilie Keij into the back of the net, making it 1-1 with 1:54 left in the third period. 
  • The Hawks punctuated a penalty stroke call with 8:40 remaining in the second overtime to end the game and take a 2-1 win. 

Notable Numbers  

  • 3: Campbell tallied her third goal of the season, one shy of her career high for a single season 
  • 3: Keij led the Minutewomen with three shots on the game. 
  • 6: Van Herwijnen tallied six total saves, marking her sixth game this season with 5-plus saves. 


Series History 

  • The Minutewomen are now 33-12-0 all-time against Saint Joseph's.
