Women’s Basketball Tops Loyola Chicago, 76-59, On The Road

Minutewomen defeat the Ramblers in first ever meeting.

CHICAGO – University of Massachusetts women's basketball topped Loyola University Chicago, 76-59, at Gentile Arena on Saturday afternoon. UMass improves to 21-4 on the season, including 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Loyola Chicago moved to 6-10 on the year and 1-2 in the league.
 
Four Minutewomen reached double figures, with Sam Breen leading with 23 points. Sydney Taylor followed with 15 points, while Destiney Philoxy and Ber'Nyah Mayo notched 15 and 13 points, respectively. Taylor grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Philoxy had a game best seven assists. Taylor also added three steals, while Angelique Ngalakulondi totaled three blocks.
 
Massachusetts went 20-for-20 (1.000 percent) from the charity stripe and outrebounded the Ramblers 37-32.
 
UMass got off to a 2-0 start, but Loyola Chicago jumped to a 5-2 lead. Breen scored her second basket of the day to close the gap to one, before Ngalakulondi put the Minutewomen ahead 6-5. Philoxy made a layup to push Massachusetts to an 8-5 lead. The Ramblers knocked down a pair of free throws to lead 9-8. Keeping the game close, both teams grabbed two more points apiece to end the first quarter with an 11-10 Loyola Chicago lead.
 
Loyola extended its lead to 13-10, before Breen hit a triple to knot it up at 13-13. UMass went on a small 6-0 run to reclaim the lead, 19-16. The Ramblers got back within two, but the Minutewomen held on to their lead, seeing a three from Mayo and a layup from Makennah White to make it a 24-17 contest. Breen and Stefanie Kulesza knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to pull UMass to a 30-23 lead with only 54 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Loyola Chicago added two points, but Ngalakulondi answered back with eight seconds on the clock to enter halftime with a 32-24 lead.
 
Massachusetts opened the second half with two made free throws by Breen, to make it a 10-point game at 34-24. Loyola Chicago began a 10-0 run for two minutes and 55 seconds to bring the game to a 34-34 draw. Philoxy hit a three to put UMass back on top, before Mayo made sank her shots from the charity stripe to pull ahead, 39-34. A 10-3 run at the 4:21 mark, including two three-pointers from Taylor, allowed UMass to extend its lead to 49-39. The Minutewomen added two more points, while the Ramblers tallied four more, but Massachusetts held on to lead, 51-43 at the end of the third.  
 
The Minutewomen maintained a steady lead in the final frame. UMass put up 25 points, with Taylor (seven points) and Breen (five points) combining for 12 points to finish the contest with a 76-59 victory.
 
Massachusetts returns to the Mullins Center on Saturday, Jan. 14, to take on Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m. on NESN+/ESPN+.
