Massachusetts Women’s Basketball Defeats Fordham On The Road, 66-57

The Minutewomen garner first road victory over Rams since 2009.
BRONX, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Fordham University, 66-57, on Wednesday night at Rose Hill Gym, earning its first win on the road over the Rams in 14 years, with the last victory coming on January 10, 2009 (W, 71-62).
UMass improves to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Fordham drops to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led the team with 18 points, followed by Sam Breen and Sydney Taylor with 10 points apiece. Breen also added 15 rebounds to record her 10th double-double of the season, and 50th of her career. Destiney Philoxy totaled a team-high five assists, while Mayo registered a team best three steals.
Massachusetts outshot Fordham .386 percent (22-of-57) from the field, including .375 percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc, while outrebounding the Rams, 38-34.
After a slow start, UMass started to find a rhythm, as Angelique Ngalakulondi put the Minutewomen on the board, beginning a 6-0 run in the opening quarter. Fordham went on a 7-0 run of their own to pull ahead, 9-6, but a step back shot from Taylor brought Massachusetts back within one. Taylor was sent to the charity stripe to shoot three, making her first bucket to tie the game up at nine apiece, before sinking her remaining two shots to give UMass an 11-9 lead. Stefanie Kulesza capped the Minutewomen's 5-0 run, and the scoring in the first quarter, with a good layup with 59 seconds left on the clock to make it a 13-9 contest.
The Rams closed the gap to one with a three-pointer by Anna DeWolfe at the 7:56 mark. A made free throw from Mayo and a triple from Kulesza helped UMass to a five-point lead. Fordham came back within three, before Mayo knocked down a three of her own to extend UMass' lead, 20-14. Fordham ended the half with a 6-2 run, but Massachusetts held on for the remaining 33 seconds to enter halftime with a 22-20 lead.
Fordham's Asiah Dingle opened the second half with a three to give the Rams the go-ahead basket, 23-22, but Ngalakulondi answered back with a layup to reclaim the lead for UMass. Ngalakulondi's bucket began a 16-5 run for the Minutewomen, which included triples from Taylor and Breen, to lead by 10 points at 38-28. Fordham secured four more points to UMass' one, making it a seven-point game at 39-32, in favor of Massachusetts.
In the final frame, Fordham went on an 11-5 run that lasted two minutes and two seconds to make it a one-point game with UMass leading 44-43. In a close fourth quarter, the Minutewomen and Rams traded four points each, before Massachusetts went on its own 11-4 run, which saw a three from Mayo and was capped by two made shots from the charity stripe by Makennah White, making it 59-51. DeWolfe of Fordham hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Rams back within three with 25 seconds left in the game. Taylor and Breen were fouled in the final seconds, with Taylor making two free throws and Breen sinking four, bringing the contest to its final score of 66-57.
Massachusetts heads to Dayton, Ohio, to battle Dayton, for an A-10 Championship rematch. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
