No. 22 Massachusetts Field Hockey Bests Columbia, 3-1

Freshman Paula Lorenzini scored her first goal as a Minutewoman to help top the Lions on Sunday afternoon.
AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 22 Massachusetts field hockey team captured a win on Sunday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex against the Columbia Lions. This win brings the Minutewomen to an 8-2 record and the Columbia Lions to a 3-5 record.
The first goal of the game, scored by freshman Gabrielle Benkenstein, occurred just 1:37 into the second quarter. Her unassisted tally was her second of the season. Freshman Mali Herberhold scored just ten minutes later, at 11:14 in the second quarter. Her shot off a deflection from goalkeeper Katie Wimmer (14 saves) extended the Minutewomen lead to 2-0.
Columbia's Meg Bowen notched a goal off an assist by Anabelle Brodeur, getting her shot past freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen (4 saves), to lessen the Lions' deficit by one. In response, Lorenzini scored the first goal of her collegiate career on a corner, assisted by junior Izzy Acquaviva at 10:49 in the third quarter.
Massachusetts led Columbia in shots (26-6), shots on goal (17-5), and corners (9-2).
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday, September 30 at 3 p.m. as they take on the La Salle Explorers on the road in Atlantic 10 conference play.
