No. 22 Massachusetts Field Hockey Sneaks Past Davidson, 2-1, In Overtime

Senior Steph Gottwals’ second goal of the season led the Minutewomen to victory on Friday afternoon.
AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 22 Massachusetts Minutewomen were victorious in overtime against Atlantic 10 foe Davidson Wildcats on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex by a score of 2-1. The win moves the Minutewomen to 7-2 on the season (2-0 A-10), and drops the Wildcats to 3-5 (0-2 A-10).
After a scoreless first quarter, senior forward Emily Crawford notched a goal for the Minutewomen on a corner off a deflection from freshman Mali Herberhold at 9:05 into the second quarter. At 8:02 in the fourth quarter, Davidson's Sarah Minges tied the game up off a deflection in front of the goal.
In overtime, Gottwals scored her third career overtime game-winning goal, batting the ball from the air into the cage past goaltender Cato Roell (4 saves) for the win just 1:47 into the overtime period.
Massachusetts and Davidson were even on penalty corners at 5 apiece, and the Minutewomen led the Wildcats in shots (10-5) and shots on goal (6-1).
The Minutewomen are back in action on Sunday, September 25 at home when they take on the Columbia Lions at 3 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
