UMASS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS PROGRAM'S FIRST ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

The No. 3 Minutewomen upset No. 1 seed Dayton, 62-56 on Sunday in Wilmington, Delaware.
WILMINGTON, Del. – No. 3 University of Massachusetts women's basketball downed the No. 1 University of Dayton, 62-56, to take home the program's first Atlantic 10 Championship Title at the CHASE Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen punched their ticket into the NCAA Women's Tournament.

UMass improved to 26-6 overall on the season, while Dayton fell to 25-5 overall in the season. Â

Sam Breen went 8-for-16 (.500) from the field, including 3-for-7 (.428) totally a game-high 19 points, while Ber'Nyah Mayo followed with 14 points of her own. Sydney Taylor and Makennah White each totaled 10 points on the day, with White shooting a 62.5 field goal percentage (5-of-8) from the field. Breen led the team with nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double, while Destiney Philoxy was first for UMass with five dimes. Mayo and Breen registered two swipes apiece, and Angelique Ngalakulondi had the lone block for the Minutewomen.

Massachusetts outrebounded Dayton, 35-26, and outscored the Flyers in points in the paint, 30-16 and in points off turnovers, 8-7. UMass shot 69.2 percent from the free throw line, making nine of 13 attempts.

After a two-point shot from the Flyers, Breen got the Minutewomen on the board first with a quick three-pointer, before going on a 17-4 run that elapsed six minutes and 56 seconds. Dayton sank a jumper and two free throws to get back within seven, but Breen's second triple of the day allowed Massachusetts to take a 20-10 lead. The first quarter ended with a late free throw by Dayton's Araion Bradshaw, bringing the contest to 20-11, in favor of UMass.

The second quarter saw the Minutewomen and Flyers trade eight points apiece, as UMass climbed to a 28-19 lead at the 6:03 mark. Dayton started a 7-2 run to make it a two-point contest at 30-28, but a 7-0 run for Massachusetts extended its lead to 37-28, after Ngalakulondi got sent to the charity stripe on an and-one to close out the first half.

In the third quarter, Breen made a jumper, pushing UMass ahead 39-28. The Flyers began a 5-1 run to come back within seven, but a layup from White and triple from Taylor allowed the Minutewomen to pull ahead, 45-33. Mayo knocked down a three-pointer at the 3:22 mark to make it a 48-35 game, while White hit back-to-back layups, to take a 13-point lead at 52-39.

Dayton outscored UMass, 17-10, but the Minutewomen were able to hold off the No. 1-seed in the final frame. Mayo scored six of Massachusetts 10 points in the quarter, while White notched the other four.
At the conclusion of the contest, the A-10 announced the All-Championship Team and the Most Outstanding Player. Breen tabbed the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while her and Taylor were named to the All-Championship Team.Â
