Massachusetts Tennis Falls In Close Battle With #71 Harvard

The Minutewomen drop a close match to Harvard, 4-3, on the road.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis dropped a close match to No. 71-ranked Harvard, 4-3, at the Murr Center Indoor Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen fall to 9-4 overall on the year with the loss.
The Minutewomen came away with the doubles point after an intense battle on court No. 2. Dylan Cannon and Mariya Krasakova paired up at No. 3 taking down Harvard's Kayla Leschley and Rachel Lim, 6-2, first. The Crimson tied up the doubles competition as Holly Fischer and Maxi Duncan of Harvard defeated duo Danielle Hack and Thamonpan Jonglertrakul, 6-3, on No. 1. Renata Farima and Vitoria Okuyama clinched the point for UMass after winning the tiebreaker on court No. 2, 7-6 (7), over Angel You and Iveta Daujotaite of Harvard.
The Crimson grabbed the first singles point of the day as Harvard's You won, 2-0, before Okuyama retired from play at No. 5. Harvard picked up its second point of the match to take the lead, after Sany Gawande of Harvard took down Cannon, 6-1, 6-1, at court No. 6. The Minutewomen knotted the match up at 2-2 with Jonglertrakul's 6-0, 7-5, win over Harvard's Rachel Eason at No. 4. Duncan of Harvard regained the lead for the Crimson with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Hack on No. 2, before Farima secured a point, defeating Harvard's Sophia Ho, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in a hard-fought battle at No. 1 to bring the match to a 3-3 draw.
Krasakova and Harvard's Fischer continued with a battle of their own at No. 3 singles. Fischer took the first set 6-4, before Krasakova claimed the second 7-6 (5). Unfortunately, Fischer came out on top, winning the third set 6-3, to clinch the match for Harvard.
Massachusetts returns to the Bay Road Indoor Tennis Center playing host to Siena on Sunday, March 27, at 1 p.m.
