Minutemen Fall To Flyers In A-10 Quarterfinals, 75-72

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Noah Fernandes scored 25 or more for the third consecutive game as he put in 26 points as the No. 10-seed Minutemen fell to No. 2-seed Dayton in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals on Friday evening at the Capital One Arena, 75-72. The Minutemen finished the season with a 15-17 overall record.

Fernandes scored eight of the first 10 UMass points and helped the Minutemen put together a 10-0 scoring run that saw them take a 16-9 lead. The junior guard went 10-of-20 from the field and added four rebounds and four assists.

Defensively, UMass held Dayton without a field goal for over five minutes to build a 21-13 advantage with 10 minutes and change left in the first half. The Flyers went on to close the half on an 8-0 run after the Minutemen went ahead by double digits to make it a 36-34 game at the break.

Dayton went on a stretch offensively in the second half where they made 7-of-9 shots, including four straight, to take their first lead since the 15:16 mark of the opening half. Trent Buttrick returned from foul trouble and put in five points in less than three minutes to help the Minutemen go back ahead by five with 13:43 left.

UMass trailed by as many as four with 7:04 on the clock and came back to tie at 61-61 with 5:49 left on a Javohn Garcia jumper. Garcia added 13 points on 5-of-7 from the field to go along with five boards in 26 minutes off the bench.

The Minutemen took a three-point lead with just under two minutes left before a 6-0 Dayton run gave the Flyers a 71-68 lead. Fernandes knocked down a pair of free throws with 15-seconds remaining to get UMass back within one, but the Flyers closed out the game at the line to make it a 75-72 final.
UMass shot just over 48-percent in the second half while Dayton shot 56-percent in a final 20 minutes that saw seven lead changes and five ties.
