Kira Kopec, Sydney Taylor and Scott Morrow earn the weekly honor.
AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Kira Kopec, junior Sydney Taylor and freshman Scott Morrow have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive.
Kopec smashed the Atlantic 10 and UMass records en route to her second straight goal in pentathlon at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday. She also bested the previous A-10 pentathlon record by almost 100 points, posting a score of 3,962 to also break the UMass record in the event. The Brooks, Alberta, native, finished in the top-three in four of the five events, winning shot put (716 points), long jump (19'1 1/2", 798 points) and the 800 meter run (2:18.72, 841 points). Her long jump mark also tied her for fourth in program history on that list.
Taylor and the Minutewomen went 2-0 on the week, as the junior averaged 25.5 points per game (51 total), 2.0 rebounds (4 total) per game and 1.5 assists per game (3 total). She had a 46.9 field goal percentage (15-of-32), a 35.0 three-point field goal percentage (7-of-20) and a 82.4 free throw percentage (14-of-17) on the week. Against VCU, the Huntington Station, N.Y., native tallied a game-high 23 points, shooting 7-for-16 (.438) from the field, including 3-of-10 (.300) from behind the three-point arc, while sinking all six of her shots from the charity stripe on the night. Taylor also added one rebound, one assist, one block and one steal to her stat sheet. On the road at Saint Louis, she put up a game best 28 points, making eight of her 16 attempts from the field (.500), four of her 10 attempts (.400) from beyond the arc and knocked down a career high eight free throws out her career best 11 attempts (.727). She came down with three boards on the night, and had two assists and one steal.
Morrow had a three-point weekend in the road sweep of Vermont, scoring his 11th and 12th goals of the season and adding an assist, with one of the two tallies coming on the power play. The three points brought his total to 30 points on the season, making him just the fourth defenseman in program history to reach the 30-point plateau (joining Cale Makar, Thomas Poeck (2x) and Justin Braun) and first to do so as a freshman. The Darien, Conn., native's 12 goals currently rank as the fifth-highest total by a defenseman in a single season in program history.
