UMass Secures 69-67 Win Over Saint Joseph’s On Camby Day

AMHERST, Mass. – The UMass starting backcourt combined for 18 assists and just two turnovers as the Minutemen closed out a two-game homestand with a bounce back win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday at the Mullins Center, 69-67. The Minutemen (11-12 Overall, 4-7 Atlantic 10) trailed by five with under seven minutes remaining and outscored the Hawks (10-13 Overall, 4-8 Atlantic 10) by seven to secure the two-point win in a game that saw 21 lead changes and six ties.
UMass trailed 57-52 with 6:49 left before a Trent Buttrick offensive rebound and put back and a Rich Kelly and-one finish sparked a quick 8-0 Minuteman run to regain a lead that held up until the Hawks tied on an Ejike Obinna dunk with eight seconds left at 67-67. Buttrick nearly finished with his second consecutive double-double as he ended the day with 11 points and a game-high nine boards.
Noah Fernandes had the ball in his hands the final possession for the Minutemen and drew a foul on a step back jumper with one second on the clock. Fernandes knocked down both from the line and finished the game with 10 points, nine assists and zero turnovers.
Michael Steadman finished with a game-high 19 points for the Minutemen, including 11 of the first 13 UMass points to help build an early five-point lead. Steadman opened the day 5-of-5 with a 3-pointer and concluded the afternoon 9-of-14 from the field.
Saint Joseph's opened the game 4-of-7 from 3-point range and was 7-of-14 from deep through the first 12 minutes as they took a 25-24 lead. The Hawks finished 10-of-27 from three and shot just over 48-percent on the day.
T.J. Weeks added 12 points for the Minutemen, including a layup with 1:37 remaining to give UMass a three-point advantage down the stretch. Weeks finished 4-of-6 from the field and added five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block. Rich Kelly added five assists for the UMass starting backcourt while C.J. Kelly chipped in six boards off the bench.
The Minutemen hit the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off at St. Bonaventure before returning home next Saturday for a noon tip against La Salle.
