No. 20 Massachusetts Field Hockey Ekes Out Win Against Richmond, 2-1

The Minutewomen were victorious thanks to goals from Mia Smith and Bella Ianni in Friday afternoon's contest.
RICHMOND, Va. - The No. 20 University of Massachusetts field hockey team edged the Richmond Spiders on Friday afternoon by a score of 2-1. The Minutewomen now sit at 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders fall to 6-10 (2-4 Atlantic 10).
After a scoreless first quarter, freshman Mia Smith capitalized off a rebound from Kristen Rake (5 saves) just eight minutes into second quarter action. To kick off the second half, Bella Ianni scored her fourth of the season off a pass from Steph Gottwals off a give and go play at 5:54 in the third quarter.
The Spiders had a late response 6:31 into the fourth quarter when Lindsey Frank shot past Myrte van Herwijnen (5 saves) to bring Richmond's deficit back to one.
The Minutewomen led the Spiders in shots (14-10) and corners (6-2).
The Minutewomen return home for senior day next Friday, October 28 at 3 p.m. as they take on the Lock Haven Bald Eagles before hitting the road once more in the regular season for a Sunday tilt against Northeastern at 12 p.m. in Boston.
