No. 15 Wake Forest Escapes No. 21 Massachusetts, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After bolting out to a 3-0 lead, No. 15 Wake Forest saw the No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team storm back with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to climb within one, but the Minutewomen couldn't find the equalizer as the Demon Deacons narrowly escaped with a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons were in control for most of the opening 50 minutes, dictating the pace of play throughout the contest and taking a 1-0 lead on a goal from Meike Lanckohr midway through the first quarter, her sixth of the year.
Elisha Evans extended the Wake Forest lead to 2-0 just 3:24 into the second quarter when she buried her third goal of the season, beating UMass goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder (10 saves).
The Demon Deacons made it a three-goal game five minutes into the third quarter when Ashley Arnold converted a penalty stroke opportunity to record her second goal of the year.
UMass wouldn't go away, though, as Georgie McTear brought the Minutewomen within two with nine minutes to play in regulation when she ripped home her third of the year, beating Wake Forest goalkeeper Tori Glaister (four saves).
Amalie Green made it a one-goal game with 4:57 to go when she buried a penalty corner opportunity for her first of the year to make it 3-2 late.
Massachusetts will be back in action on Sunday when the Minutewomen return home to host Providence at 1 p.m. from Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
