No. 22 Massachusetts Blanks Providence, 2-0

September 26, 2021 | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 22 Massachusetts field hockey team (6-3) used a 16-3 shots advantage and 9-0 edge in penalty corners to shutout the Providence Friars (5-5) on Sunday afternoon at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.

After the Minutewomen and Friars both got off to a slow start in the first quarter, Massachusetts tilted the field in its favor from there when Hannah de Gast scored her first goal of the season, rifling a shot into the lower left corner.

UMass staved off a pair of yellow cards coming out of the halftime break, holding PC to just one shot during the advantage and no corner opportunities.

Massachusetts went ahead for good with 7:03 to go when Mus Defauwes scored her third of the year with a shot through traffic off a corner chance to move to 4-0 at Gladchuk this season.

UMass will be back in action on Friday when the Minutewomen resume Atlantic 10 play against VCU at 3 p.m. at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
