McTear Named CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

Second Team NFHCA All-American recognized for academic success
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts senior midfielder Georgie McTear has been named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, announced by the organization on Thursday. McTear is the first field hockey student-athlete from UMass to receive such honors since Alexa Sikalis was honored following the 2013 campaign.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced in early August.
Arguably the most lauded field hockey player in the Atlantic 10 last season, McTear was named a Second Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), NFHCA Northeast All-Region First Team, the Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, A-10 All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team.
A psychology major from Portsmouth, England, McTear produced a league-leading seven goals and 17 points, along with a team-best three assists, even in missing one of Massachusetts' 11 matches last Spring. McTear is consistently on the field for 50-plus minutes per game, serving as a fierce competitor all over the pitch and a primary striker on attack penalty corners. Prior to the Spring 2021 season McTear was elected by her teammates as a co-captain.
McTear, who will return to UMass in Fall 2021, has earned NFHCA All-Region accolades each year since 2017, making her the first Minutewoman with four consecutive All-Region nods since Sarah Hawkshaw from 2014-17.
UMass is housed in CoSIDA's District 1, which includes all NCAA Division I schools in New England as well as New York. Each Academic All-District team around the country is voted on by sports information directors in that respective region who hold active CoSIDA membership and pay annual dues.
McTear is the second Academic All-District First Team honoree on the UMass campus during the 2020-21 academic year, following women's basketball forward Sam Breen.
