Ireland Places Hawkshaw on Tokyo 2020 Field Hockey Roster

June 21, 2021 | Field Hockey

Former Massachusetts standout reached two NCAA Tournaments as a Minutewoman

DUBLIN, Ireland – University of Massachusetts field hockey alumna Sarah Hawkshaw has been named to the 16-player Irish national team slated to compete at the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics from July 23-August 8. Hawkshaw is the second player with a UMass tie to be named to a Tokyo 2020 field hockey roster, joining goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder (South Africa).

Previously scheduled for July and August 2020, the Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hawkshaw, who has continued her playing career in Ireland with Railway Union Hockey Club, owns 38 caps on the international stage. Sean Dancer will coach the national team and Katie Mullan and Anna O'Flanagan will lead the side as captain and vice-captain, respectively.

"A huge congratulations to Sarah Hawkshaw and we wish her and Ireland all the best in Tokyo!" said UMass head coach Barb Weinberg. "In my coaching career, I have witnessed few players with the work ethic and leadership that Sarah possesses. Her effort and drive are unparalleled. If she sets a goal on or off the hockey pitch, she does whatever it takes to reach it. We are all so proud of her."

She is the 11th UMass player all-time to make an Olympic roster. Hawkshaw most recently competed with the national team earlier this month at the EuroHockey Championships.

In her Massachusetts career spanning 2014-17, Hawkshaw was named Atlantic 10 All-Conference all four years and collected NFHCA All-America laurels her final two seasons (2016-17). The forward and midfielder graduated ranked eighth in program history in career scoring (92 points) and seventh in goals (40). During her time in Amherst, the Minutewomen won Atlantic 10 titles in 2015 and 2016 and received the league's automatic bid to both respective NCAA Tournaments.

The Dublin native was part of the Ireland national squad that initially qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a Nov. 3, 2019 penalty shootout win over Canada. A crowd of 6,137 witnessed the thriller, setting an Irish record for a women's national team event and witnessing the country's first ever Olympic berth in field hockey.
