Massachusetts Hockey Adds Matt Lindsay To Coaching Staff

The college hockey veteran comes to Amherst with an impressive resume that includes conference championships and NCAA appearances at Penn State and Princeton.
AMHERST, Mass. – College hockey coaching veteran Matt Lindsay has joined the University of Massachusetts hockey program as an assistant coach, contingent upon the successful completion of a background check, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Thursday. Lindsay comes to Amherst following 10 seasons at Penn State where he helped the Nittany Lions to two NCAA Tournament berths and two Big Ten titles.
"We are very excited to welcome Matt Lindsay to our program," said Carvel. "Matt is one of the most experienced and well-respected assistant coaches in college hockey. He has a long track record of impressive recruiting which has resulted in championship level teams at Penn State and Princeton. Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and professionalism with him to UMass and is known as one of the hardest working recruiters on the circuit. Beyond all of that he is a high quality person and he will add to the culture of our program."
With 20 years of college hockey coaching experience, Lindsay played a vital role in Penn State's game planning and recruiting as the program rose from a newly-minted Division I program in 2012 to Big Ten Tournament Champions in 2017 and Big Ten Regular Season Champions in 2019-20 as the team registered a program-best 12 conference victories and 41 points.
Penn State advanced to its sixth Big Ten semifinal in seven years prior to the postseason cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-20. Following season's end, the Nittany Lions had a pair of players earn All-America honors for the first time and Cole Hults became the first-ever Nittany Lion to be named Big Ten Player of the Year.
On Lindsay's watch, Penn State lead the nation in scoring in 2018-19 with 4.54 goals per game, while also ranking first nationally in goals (177), assists (301) and points (478).
Lindsay helped bring Trevor Hamilton to Penn State who went on to become the first Nittany Lion to win a major conference award as he was named the 2017-18 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and just the third Penn State skater to earn first-team All-Conference accolades in program history.
Prior to his time with the Nittany Lions, Lindsay served as an assistant coach at Princeton from 2007-11 where he was a part of one of the most eras in program history. The Tigers made two NCAA tournament appearances (2008, 2009) and earned 2008 ECAC and Ivy league Championships during his tenure and set a school record for wins (22) in 2009.
Lindsay spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach at Robert Morris where he served as the team's video coordinator and aided the squad's recruiting efforts. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Colorado College, where he handled video, pre-scouting and one-ice responsibilities. From 2002-05, Lindsay was an assistant coach at Hobart College and coached one season (2001-02) in the same capacity at Utica College.
A 2001 graduate of Williams College, Lindsay earned the William E. McCormick "Coaches" Award as a senior. The award is presented to a member of the hockey team who best exemplifies leadership, loyalty, a selfless devotion to the team, a youthful delight in the game of hockey and, above all, a strong commitment to community service.
Lindsay and his wife, C.C. have one daughter, Josephine, and two dogs, Gordie and Hobbes.
