Chabon's Long Jump Gold Highlights Day One Of A-10 Championships For Men's Track And Field

The junior's winning jump also set a program record in the event.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Andrew Chabon's gold medal and school record in long jump highlighted a successful day one at the Atlantic 10 Championships for University of Massachusetts men's track and field. Through six scored events, the Minutemen sit third with 27 points, while Rhode Island leads the pack with 66 points.
 
Chabon leapt 24 feet, 1 inch to UMass' first-ever A-10 gold in men's long jump outdoors and the best mark in program history. Senior Noah Kortkamp also scored in the event, taking sixth with a jump of 23 feet, 1.25 inches.
 
Junior Peter Kitsakos earned bronze in javelin with a personal best toss of 187 feet, 1 inch and classmate Joseph Manchester took seventh with a personal best of 182 feet, 4 inches.
 
Senior Enrique Martinez placed fifth in hammer throw at 178 feet, 9 inches and freshman Michael Norberg rounded out the day's scorers placing seventh in steeplechase at 9 minutes, 30.64 seconds.
 
UMass sent three into Sunday's finals on the track. In the 400 meter dash, junior Lucas Honohan posted the top time in prelims with a personal best of 48.01 seconds and junior Colin Stoddard also advanced in the event, taking fifth in 48.72 seconds. Senior Jordan Howard earned a spot in the 100 meter dash final, placing third in prelims in 10.73 seconds.
 
Through five events in decathlon, Matthew Tarantino sits fourth with 3,075 points. His place in the standings was aided by a second-place performance in long jump (20'7.25", 648 points) and a third-place finish in high jump (5'10.75", 627 points).
 
Action resumes at the Atlantic 10 Championships tomorrow, May 2, with decathlon 110 meter hurdles at 9 a.m.
