April 09, 2021 | Baseball
Teams conclude series on Saturday with two contests beginning at noon
MERION STATION, Pa. – University of Massachusetts baseball struck first in game one and led late in game two, but the Minutemen fell to Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader Friday to mark the start of Atlantic 10 Conference play. The sides will play another twinbill on Saturday beginning at noon from Smithson Field, with a seven-inning game being followed with a nine-inning contest.
Game One
Saint Joseph's 5, UMass 1
Catcher Dylan Judd clubbed his team-leading fifth home run of the season, but St. Joe's tallied five unanswered runs to take the opener. Judd, who finished 2-for-4 in the game, stepped to the dish with two outs in the first inning and blasted an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence.
The Hawks leveled the score at one-apiece in the bottom of the second, then pulled in front with another run in the fifth and three more in the last of the sixth.
On the mound, starter Jack Steele went 5.2 innings for Massachusetts, tying a career-high with six strikeouts but taking the loss despite only two earned runs allowed. Matt Aronson relieved Steele for the remainder of the contest and did not allow a hit. Ian McCole went the distance for St. Joe's in the win.
Game Two
Saint Joseph's 7, UMass 5 (7 innings)
Second baseman Eddy Hart and center fielder Ryan Coleman had two hits each for UMass, including a double for Coleman and Coleman also came across with the go-ahead run for the Minutemen in the seventh inning. But St. Joe's walked off in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer from Nate Thomas.
Coleman put the Minutemen on the board in the top of the third, doubling with one out and scoring on a Kevin Skagerlind single through the right side. SJU would post a three-spot in the last of the third and take a 4-1 lead.
UMass came back within one in the sixth, thanks to a Hart RBI base hit that plated Skagerlind, followed up by a Dylan Judd grounder that ultimately brought left fielder Collin Shapiro 90 feet home. Aided by a Coleman bunt single and a Skagerlind squeeze bunt, designated hitter Michael Rounds pushed across the tying run. Then with Coleman on third, Hart grounded an 0-2 pitch to that side before a throwing error continued the inning, allowing Coleman to score and give UMass a 5-4 lead.
Southpaw Daniel Livnat started the game on the mound and allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out four. Tucker Wittman took the loss and SJU's Alec Rodriguez was the winner out of the bullpen.
