Buttrick arrives in Amherst following four seasons at Penn State

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts men's basketball head coach Matt McCall announced Thursday that Trent Buttrick will join the program as a graduate transfer from Penn State for the 2021-22 season.

"We're very excited to welcome Trent to our program in 2021-22," McCall said. "Trent brings significant size and strength to our roster, along with the ability to stretch the floor and a tenacity under the bucket that will greatly benefit our team. Having played four seasons in the Big Ten, he will be able to pull from his experience facing some of the top players in the country when going against the talented bigs in the Atlantic 10."

Buttrick, a 6'8'', 240-pound forward from Bloomsburg, Pa., was a four-year letterwinner for the Nittany Lions, helping the team to a 72-55 record during his time in Happy Valley, including a No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and ranked No. 35 in the final NCAA NET Rankings in 2019-20 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He has appeared in 79 career games, including 25 games during the 2020-21 campaign. As a senior this season, Buttrick shot nearly 40% from the floor and averaged more than 13 minutes off the bench. His best night of the season came against Minnesota when he scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting (3-of-6 from three) and tying a season-best seven rebounds in just 14 minutes on March 3.

Prior to attending Penn State, Buttrick played baseball and basketball at Community School of Naples (CSN) as a junior and senior, where he averaged 18.1 points and 10.8 rebounds for Seahawks as a senior. He also posted 17 double-doubles and set both the career (314) and single-game (23) record for rebounds, and finished his two-year career at CSN with 873 points, a total that ranks in the top five in school history.

"Trent is a high character kid," McCall said. "We're confident that the way he conducts himself on and off the floor will rub off on his teammates. We're looking forward to having Trent join our program."

Massachusetts is coming off an 8-7 season that saw the Minutemen reach the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals for the first time since 2016.
