Sophomore midfielder provided two goals across wins over Maine, UMass Lowell
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced University of Massachusetts field hockey sophomore midfielder Jess Beech as the A-10 Player of the Week on Tuesday. Beech won the accolade after she provided a pair of goals across hard-fought victories over Maine and UMass Lowell, both by 2-1 margins.
Beech needed only took two shots during the weekend for her two goals. She converted her first collegiate penalty stroke attempt in the game against Maine on Fri., March 12 when she equalized the score at 1-all in the 36th minute. Beech took the penalty stroke in place of the team's primary shooter, Georgie McTear, who was not on the field at the time of the stroke call. Beech then added the eventual game-winning goal against UMass Lowell in the 43rd minute on Sun., March 14. She scored on a penalty corner redirect in front of the cage when she tipped Emily Crawford's attempt into the back of the cage for her team-leading third goal of the year.
Beech currently leads the team in scoring through five games with seven points via three goals and an assist. Her 21 career points are second among active players to only McTear's 45.
Massachusetts' 4-1 overall record through five games marks the team's best start to a season since 2013.
The Minutewomen continues their season with the first conference game on the schedule as Saint Joseph's (3-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10) visits the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex for a Sat., March 20 tilt at 1 p.m.
