UMass Falls To North Texas At Hall Of Fame Classic, 66-57

Greg Jones finished with a season-high 12 points and game-high eight rebounds.

FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to North Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Dickies Arena, 66-57. The Minutemen (6-5 Overall) trailed by as many as 18 points before getting back within striking distance midway through the second half.
 
UMass took a 12-7 lead with 15:49 to go in the first, forcing a North Texas timeout after Noah Fernandes found Greg Jones down low for the two-handed slam. Fernandes scored five early points as well and had seven of his 13 points in the opening half. The junior guard added a game-high eight assists.
 
Jones finished with a season-high 12 points on 4-of-8 from the field and added a game-high eight rebounds in his third straight start for the Minutemen.
 
The Mean Green came out of the timeout and strung together a 12-0 run to regain the lead and go ahead 19-12. North Texas held a 39-27 lead at the halftime break after shooting 57-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The Minutemen put together a run of their own to get back within striking distance after the Mean Green took its largest lead of the day at 49-31 with 16:28 to go. Fernandes found Jones again for a two-handed dunk to cap off an 11-0 run and bring the score to 49-42 with 13:14 remaining.
 
The Minutemen held North Texas without a field goal for 5:42 of game time to help them get back within seven. UMass' defense held North Texas to 32-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes of play and forced the Mean Green to commit seven of their 10 turnovers in the half.
 
North Texas extended its lead back to double figures at 55-42 with 10:45 to go before five consecutive points from Rich Kelly brought UMass back within seven points with just over three minutes left. The guard was one of four Minutemen in double figures as he finished with 10 points while C.J. Kelly added 13. Dyondre Dominguez added seven points off the bench to go along with four rebounds.
 
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center for their next three games and open the homestand on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. against Fairfield.
