UMASS ELECTS FOOTBALL CAPTAINS FOR 1982; PEARSON MVP

AMHERST -- Jerry Gordon, an offensive guard from Randolph, Dwayne Lopes, a cornerback from New Bedford and Tom Murray, a fullback from Winchester, have been elected tri-captains of the 1982 University of Massachusetts football team.
Gordon, a senior with another year of eligibility, was a co-captain of the 1981 team which posted a 6-3 record and finished in a tie for the Yankee Conference Championship with a 4-1 mark. At 6'1, 245, Gordon was selected a second team AllÂ-Yankee Conference player.
Murray, considered an outstanding blocker and hard runner, was the second leading rusher on the team with 250 yards, a 3.4 average and five touchdowns. He was also chosen second team All-Yankee Conference.
Lopes led UMass in interceptions in 1981 with six and was a first team AllÂ-Yankee Conference selection at his cornerback spot.
Tailback Garry Pearson of Bristol, CT, was chosen the UMass Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year. The 5'11, 185 pound junior is the allÂ-time career UM rushing leader and gained 1026 yards in 1981 for·a per game average of 114.0. He was also chosen first team All-Yankee Conference.
Senior linebacker Peter DiTommaso, a first team All-Yankee Conference lineÂbacker, received the William T. Evans Trophy for sportsmanship and football ability. DiTommaso, a co-captain of the 1981 team, led UMass in tackles with 94.
Gordon also received the Allen Leon Pond Medal which is given for general excellence in the sport of football. Gordon was a junior varsity football player two years ago before moving into the starting lineup in 1980 and being named a twoÂ-time UMass captain.Â
