#8/9 Massachusetts Hockey Comes Up Short At Merrimack, 3-2

December 06, 2020 | Hockey

Gicewicz and Kiefiuk provided goals for the Minutemen, Gicewicz’s was his first in a UMass uniform.

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – No. 8/9 University of Massachusetts was unable to overcome a 1-0 first period deficit, falling 3-2 at Merrimack in a non-league meeting with the Warriors on Sunday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 2-3-1 to start the year, while Merrimack levels its record at 1-1-0.

"It was a usual game at Merrimack, physical, fast-paced, they play well here," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I didn't think we came ready to play. First period Merrimack controlled the game, we took too many penalties, didn't allow us to really get things going. I thought second period we were better. Third period we played fine, but three penalties made it, again, hard for us to mount a continual push. Merrimack played hard and deserved to win tonight."

Merrimack converted on its first power play of the contest with Zach Vinnell driving the puck through a crowd past a screened Matt Murray at 11:07 from Alex Jeffries and Patrick Holway.

Redshirt senior Carson Gicewicz knotted things up at 1-1 on the opening shift of the second period, rocketing a pass from seniors Oliver Chau and Jake Gaudet into the net from the top of the left faceoff circle for his first tally as a Minuteman.

Merrimack responded quickly with Alex Jefferies driving to the net and knocking the puck home from Chase Gresock and Logan Drevitch at 3:51 to put the Warriors back in front, 2-1.

UMass tied the score at 2-2 with a power-play goal by sophomore Cal Kiefiuk, set up by junior Marc Del Gaizo and freshman Aaron Bohlinger at 6:49.

The Warriors had an answer once more, though. Holway redirected Vinnell's shot from the point to regain the lead for Merrimack, 3-2, 10:06 into the second. Filipo Forsmark earned an assist on the play, as well.

That would cap the scoring as neither side found the back of the net in the third. The Warriors finished with a 22-19 edge in shots and were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 1-for-4. Murray made 19 saves for UMass, while his counterpart Zachary Borgiel had 17 stops for Merrimack.
