George Mason Edges UMass Men's Basketball In Double OT, 93-92

December 30, 2020 | Men's Basketball

Tre Mitchell scores 23 to lead the Minutemen

AMHERST, Mass. – Tre Mitchell scored 23 points, including 19 in the second half and overtime, but George Mason (5-2, 1-0) erased an eight-point deficit late to force overtime and then a seven-point gap to force double overtime before knocking off the UMass men's basketball team, 93-92, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.

With the Minutemen (2-3, 1-1) leading by three in the final seconds of regulation, the Patriots were awarded three free throws after a shooting foul was called on Massachusetts with eight seconds to play. Tyler Kolek (19 points; 6-of-9 shooting) would make all three free throws to force extra time at 62-62.

UMass opened the first overtime on a 9-2 run, with five of those points coming from Mitchell, to take a 71-64 lead with 3:35 to go. As both teams battled foul trouble down the stretch, Jamal Hartwell II (19 points on 6-of-10 shooting) buried two threes in the final minute, one to bring the visitors within one at 77-76 with 51 seconds left, and another with seven seconds left in OT to level the score at 80 and send the game to a second overtime.

The Minutemen used a 6-0 run to start double OT to lead 86-80, but would be held without a field goal for the final 4:15 as Hartwell II buried two late threes to put the Patriots up by one.

Jordan Miller led all scorers with 26 points and eight rebounds for George Mason, including a 10-of-15 night from the free throw line. GMU shot 47% on the night (32-of-68).

Mitchell, meanwhile, paced four Minutemen in double-figures including captain Carl Pierre (19 points and seven rebounds), Noah Fernandes (19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks) and T.J. Weeks Jr. (14 points).

Massachusetts shot 25-of-65 as a team and 10-of-30 from three-point range.

UMass is scheduled to be back in action next Wednesday when the Minutemen travel to George Washington.
