INGOGLIA AND FENNELL NAMED UMASS CO-CAPTAINS FOR 1995
April 28, 1995 | Football
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts Head Football Coach Mike Hodges announced today that senior running back Rene lngoglia (Rochester, NY) and senior defensive end Vernard Fennell (Boston, MA) have been named co-captains for the 1995 football season.
Ingoglia, who was also co-captain last season, returns for his final campaign as one of the favorites to win the Walter Payton Award, given annually to the nation's best Div. I-AA football player. Fennell was injured much of last season with a fractured leg bone, but is a preseason All-Yankee Conference and ECAC All-Star candidate this coming season.
The announcement came prior to UMass' annual Maroon vs. White Spring Game, which culminates four weeks of spring football practice.
"I think the players made an excellent choice in picking Vemard and Rene as co-captains," said Hodges. "They are two young gentleman who have shown their leadership capabilities both on and off the field during their years at UMass and they are deserving of the honor."
The Minutemen will open the 1995 season on Sept. 9 with a home game at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium against Yankee Conference rival Richmond. UMass has been ranked No. 16 in the College and Pro Football News weekly preseason poll and are expected to challenge for their 18th Yankee Conference title.Â
