Brian Mathews Signs NLI With UMass Basketball
November 11, 2020 | Men's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. -- The UMass men's basketball team officially added more size to its roster for next season as Brian Mathews (Chicago, Illinois) signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday during the start of the early signing period.
Mathews, a 6-9, 215-pound center will arrive in Amherst from DePaul College Prep, where Mathews helped the team to a 26-6 mark during the 2019-20 season and an appearance in the Sectional Playoffs.
"Brian is a high character kid," said head coach Matt McCall. "He's a big, physical frontcourt player who has a high skillset. He's very young, we believe his best days of basketball are in front of him. His ceiling as a player is tremendously high."
The Minutemen also announced its Atlantic 10 conference slate on Wednesday, which is scheduled to begin on December 9 at La Salle. Massachusetts will host nine league contests at home in the Mullins Center and will be featured nationally on ESPN, NBC Sports Network, or CBS Sports Network in seven of their 18 league matchups.
In addition, UMass Athletics announced that it will not host fans at its home events until further notice. The decision was made following consultation with local public health and university officials and in accordance with the Governor's Executive Order prohibiting large capacity venues from opening to the public.
