Two-time NFHCA All-America honoree and former UMass captain to represent home country
STELLENBOSCH, South Africa – University of Massachusetts field hockey alumna Sarah Hawkshaw is currently representing her home nation of Ireland at the Summer Series in Stellenbosch, South Africa in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Hockey Ireland will announce the Olympic roster at a later date.
Ireland's schedule at the Summer Series began on Jan. 19 and includes South Africa (Jan. 19, Jan. 26, Jan. 28), the Netherlands U-21 (Jan. 21) and Germany (Jan. 25, Jan. 29). It ensures that Hawkshaw will face current UMass junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder's South Africa side three times.
In her Massachusetts career spanning 2014-17, Hawkshaw was named Atlantic 10 All-Conference all four years and collected NFHCA All-America laurels her final two seasons (2016-17). She graduated ranked eighth in program history in career scoring (92 points) and seventh in goals (40). During her time in Amherst, the Minutewomen won Atlantic 10 titles in 2015 and 2016 and received the league's automatic bid to both respective NCAA Tournaments.
The Dublin native was part of the Ireland national squad that qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on the heels of a Nov. 3, 2019 penalty shootout win over Canada. A crowd of 6,137 witnessed the thriller, setting an Irish record for a women's national team event and witnessing the country's first ever Olympic berth in field hockey.
