Crawford scored her first collegiate goal in the setback
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Emily Crawford scored her first goal as a Minutewoman, but in the end University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to No. 11 nationally-ranked Saint Joseph's by a 4-1 score on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. With the loss, UMass falls to 3-5 and an even 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Hawks improve to 7-1 and 1-0 against league foes.
All five Massachusetts losses on the season have come versus teams ranked in the NFHCA Top 25 Poll.
Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder made a season-high nine saves and SJU's Victoria Kammerinke tallied four stops on the afternoon.
The Hawks were led in part by a solid effort on attacking penalty corners as three of the squad's four goals came out of corner opportunities. Tonya Botherway put the visitors on the board in the seventh minute and Jordan Olenginski doubled the St. Joe's lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute. Kathrin Bentz earned assists on both corner tallies.
UMass nearly answered the first Hawks' tally in the seventh minute, as freshman Steph Gottwals went one-on-one with Kammerinke in the circle and dodged around the goalkeeper. But a defensive save by Cassidy Atchison kept the score at 1-0.
Two quick goals out of halftime by Pepa Serrano and Bentz increased the SJU advantage to 4-0 in the 39th minute.
The Minutewomen ended Kammerinke's shutout bid in the 56th minute when junior Georgie McTear carried the ball straight through the midfield and into the circle, firing on-cage before Crawford tipped the ball home.
St. Joe's had the advantage in shots on goal (13-6) and penalty corners (6-3).
Massachusetts returns to the pitch on Sun., Sept. 29, hosting Richmond in a noon tilt at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. As part of the day's action, former UMass standout Jenn Salisbury (1990-93) will be honored on-field at halftime, coinciding with Salisbury's induction into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame.
