Minutewomen win both sides of top flight, crowned champions
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts tennis put forth a dominant effort in the Brown Invitational Flight 'A' on Saturday and claimed the top tier's championship as both UMass groups swept their matches and advanced to the championship round opposite each other. Instead of squaring off against one another, the UMass Flight A teams of Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi, and Jodie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy will face opposition from Brown, Dartmouth or Stony Brook.
Kovacevic and Bocchi bested Dartmouth's Peng and Guan, 3-0, for the first Minutewoman finalists. The duo took a 6-1 doubles match before Kovacevic outperformed Guan 6-3, 6-2 and Bocchi dropped Peng 6-3, 6-3.
In the second Flight A semifinal, Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy yielded the doubles point to Lau and Kowalsky from Brown. However, after the 6-4 doubles loss, Lawrence-Taylor fought through a three-set match for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback over Lau and Napadiy notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kowalsky.
Both of the UMass Flight B teams fell in their semifinal matches. Ashley Avery and Shiran Arol Wiegand teamed up for a 6-4 victory over Darmouth's Conrad and Cable, but Conrad downed Arol Wiegand and Cable won over Avery for the team win and advancement to the championship round. Stony Brook's Ribiero and Theys took a 2-1 matchup from Jovana Bogicevic and Jasmin Tripathy in similar fashion. Bogicevic and Tripathy won in doubles action before each lost their respective singles match.
Sarah Mezini and Tami Comins also stepped to the courts at Brown on Saturday as part of Flight C competition, but dropped their respective matches.
