Tennis Wins 11 Matches During Brown Invite’s First Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts tennis went 11-3 overall across 14 singles and doubles matches during the opening day of the 2019 Brown Invitational, hosted by Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The tournament features a new format in 2019, in which school rosters are split into teams of two competitors each for the duo to square off with another two-person group in singles and doubles action.
The 10-woman UMass squad split into five teams of two for the day's schedule: Janja Kovacevic/Martina Bocchi, Jodie Lawrence-Taylor/Anna Napadiy, Ashley Avery/Shiran Arol Wiegand, Jovana Bogicevic/Jasmin Tripathy and Tami Comins/Sarah Mezini.
Kovacevic and Bocchi squared off with Stony Brook's Jamie Wei and Elizabeth Pam, following a 7-5 loss during doubles the duo grabbed back-to-back victories in singles. Kovacevic bested Wei 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 while Bocchi downed Pam 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. It marked one of two "Flight A" contests, with the other featuring Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy. In the second Flight A Quarterfinal, Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy took all three matches from Allison McCann and Nina Paripovic. They Minutewomen did so with a 6-4 doubles win before Napadiy downed McCann 6-0, 7-5 and Lawrence-Taylor won versus Paripovic 6-4, 1-6 (10-2).
Arol Wiegand, a team newcomer, debuted for UMass alongside Avery, a veteran, in the Flight B Quarterfinal Round. Avery and Arol Wiegand outperformed Sasha Bekirova and Mathilde Sreeves from Stony Brook with a 7-6 (4) triumph in doubles and consecutive singles match victories.
Bogicevic and Tripathy went 2-1 on the day with a 6-2 victory during doubles before Bogicevic collected a singles match win through a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback. Two more Minutewomen competed in Flight C Singles in Comins and Mezini. The duo did not play a doubles match; however, Mezini downed Nolwenn Cardoso in singles competition.
The Minutewomen continues their 2019 season with the second day of competition at the Brown Invitational on Fri., Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
