Massachusetts alumnus pitched 9.2 innings in Short-Season A without an earned run allowed
COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of Massachusetts alumnus and right-handed pitcher Justin Lasko has been assigned to the Columbia Fireflies, the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets and member of the South Atlantic League.
Lasko makes the move after eight appearances with the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets' Short-Season A affiliate in the New York-Penn League. All out of the bullpen, he pitched 9.2 innings totaling an 0-1 record with a save. Although Lasko was charged with three runs in that time, none were earned and he logged five strikeouts against just four hits.
He made his professional debut on June 15 in a 2-1 win at Staten Island, 10 days after the Mets drafted Lasko in the 30th round with the 898th overall pick. He became the 57th Minuteman to be drafted all-time and the first since 2014.
A four-year contributor at Massachusetts and three-year ace, Lasko wrapped up his collegiate career this past Spring with a 3.47 ERA and 15-18 record. He graduated in possession of multiple program records, including career starts (48), innings pitched (311.1) and strikeouts (247).
A sport management major, Lasko rounded out his time in the classroom with a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average and was honored by UMass Athletics with the Spring 2019 Scholar-Athlete Award. Following his senior season, he was tabbed to the A-10 All-Academic Team.
