Long Wins Javelin Title For Men’s Track & Field On Day One Of A-10 Championships

The senior posted the best throw by a Minuteman since 2001.

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior John Long earned the title of Atlantic 10 javelin champion to lead University of Massachusetts men's track and field on day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday at the UMass Track & Field Complex. Through seven scored events, the Minutemen sit third in the team standings with 41 points, trailing only Rhode Island (59 points) and George Mason (49.5) in the 12-team field.
 
Long threw a career-best 210 feet, 8 inches to win javelin and move up to third all-time in program history, the furthest toss since Chad Schwarz threw 210 feet, 10 inches in 2001. Freshmen Joseph Manchester and Flynn Mitchell both set personal records to take fifth and eighth in the scoring with marks of 181 feet, 7 inches and 173 feet, 1 inch, respectively.  
 
Earlier in the day senior Myles McDermott collected UMass' first medal of the weekend, jumping a personal-best 23 feet, 3.5 inches to claim silver in long jump. Junior Noah Kortkamp took eighth at 22 feet, 4.5 inches.
 
Junior Kendall Westhoff finished just off the podium in the 10,000 meter run, claiming fourth with a time of 30 minutes, 38.18 seconds.

Junior Mason Lord and sophomore Jack Perry both cleared 13 feet, 11.25 in pole vault to place seventh and eighth.

 
To cap the day's events on the track, juniors Dawson Bathgate and Erik Engstrom placed fourth and fifth in steeple with times of 9 minutes, 11.06 seconds and 9 minutes, 15.06 seconds, respectively. Engstrom's performance marked a personal best.
 
Senior Jonathan Collins leads decathlon through day one with a score of 3,675 points, winning four of the five events on Saturday: 100 meter dash (11.12, 834 points), long jump (21'2.5", 688 points), shot put (41'11.5", 654 points) and 400 meter dash (49.33, 846 points). Freshman Matthew Tarantino currently sits fourth with 3,017 points, aided by placing second in long jump (20'9.25", 659 points) and third in the 400 (53.60, 636 points). Sophomore Thomas O'Donoghue is sixth with 663 points after finishing second in the final event of the day, the 400 (53.44, 663 points).
 
Kortkamp moved on to Sunday's final in 110 meter hurdles after running 14.90 seconds to seventh in preliminaries.
 
Junior Jordan Howard claimed fourth in the 100 meter dash preliminaries, advancing to the final with a personal-record time of 10.74 seconds. Howard also set a personal best to move on to the final in 200 meter dash, taking fifth in preliminaries at 21.62 seconds. Junior Michael Cuthbert qualified, as well, claiming ninth in the 200 meter preliminaries at 21.78 seconds, a personal record.
 
Competition resumes on Sunday, May 5, with decathlon 110 meter hurdles getting under way at 9:15 a.m.
