Men’s Track & Field Claims Third At New England Championships

The Minutemen collected four medals on the final day of competition, highlighted by Evan Burton’s gold in discus.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field secured a third-place team finish at the New England Championships after collecting four medals on the final day of competition. The Minutemen posted a score of 66 points, while Southern Connecticut earned the team title (112) and Rhode Island took second (109.5) in the field of 38 teams.
Senior Evan Burton won the New England discus title with a toss of 163 feet 6 inches, while sophomore Coston O'Brien scored, as well, with a mark of 143 feet, 9 inches, which was good for eighth.
Junior Dawson Bathgate earned a silver medal in steeplechase, crossing the finish at 9 minutes, 6.13 seconds. Classmate Erik Engstrom also scored, placing sixth with a time of 9 minutes, 27.20 seconds.
Junior Jordan Howard captured bronze in 100 meter dash, clocking in at 10.83 seconds. Howard helped the Minutemen to a bronze medal in the 4x100 meter relay, as well. Hayden Gray, Michael Cuthbert, Andrew Hanwell and Howard combined to run 41.26 seconds, the third-fastest time in UMass history.
The Minutemen also scored in the 4x800 and 4x400. The 4x800 meter relay squad of Kyle Guzman, Herlin Rijo, Nicholas Santos and Brian Gendron claimed fourth in 7 minutes, 43.11 seconds. Colin Stoddard, Hanwell, Lucas Honohan and Jonathan Collins posted a time of 3 minutes 16.29 seconds to take sixth in the 4x400 meter relay.
Senior Nathan Adeyemi scored in triple jump, placing fifth with a mark of 47 feet, 3.5 inches.
