Minutemen Fall Short at Rhode Island, 5-3

Greene records fourth home run in series-opening setback

KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to overcome a third-inning grand slam off the bat of Rhode Island's Xavier Vargas as the Minutemen fell, 5-3, in the teams' series opener Friday at Bill Beck Field.

Senior Logan Greene and junior Eddy Hart each had two hits on the day, with Greene's afternoon including his fourth home run of the season, an opposite field two-run shot in the sixth inning.

UMass did strike first in its first time at bat. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro led off the ballgame with a walk, then darted to third on a base hit by Hart. A wild pitch then scored Shapiro and put the Minutemen ahead, 1-0.

That score remained until the bottom of the third, when URI opened the inning with two singles and loaded the bases on an error, setting up Vargas' grand slam which put the Rams ahead for the remainder of the day. The home side added an insurance run in the fifth when Jackson Coutts doubled to the gap in left center field to score Josh Brodeur from second.

The Minutemen did not go down quietly and moved back within two on Greene's homer in the sixth, but could not get any closer than 5-3. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto preceded Greene with a double down the left field line and into the corner before Greene fouled off the first two pitches and sent the third over the fence in right center.

Massachusetts threatened in the seventh with runners at the corners and also brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but URI worked out of each situation to come away with the series lid-lifter.

For Rhody, Nick Robinson was the winner on the mound (2-6) after Robinson worked six innings of three-run ball, giving up five hits and fanning seven. Tyler Brosius closed out the final two innings for his sixth save.

Senior Justin Lasko went seven innings in the loss (3-6), scattering four earned runs on eight hits and striking out five. In his program-record 46th career start, Lasko became the first pitcher in program history to eclipse 300 innings (303.1) and increased his strikeout total to 242, an all-time best in Amherst.

The teams are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series on Sat., May 11 beginning at 1 p.m. at Bill Beck Field.
