Program commemorates 50-year anniversary of remarkable College World Series run
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the program's 1969 team Sat., May 4 in conjunction with a 1 p.m. game against Davidson at Earl Lorden Field.
Coached by the late legendary head coach Dick Bergquist, the group finished with a record of 22-10 including a 9-1 mark in the Yankee Conference. In its third year under Bergquist, Massachusetts went on to win the Yankee Conference, the NCAA District I title and represent New England at the 1969 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska at Rosenblatt Stadium.
UMass needed a victory over Dartmouth and two against Boston University to secure the District I title and punch its second ticket to Omaha in program history. Right-hander John Kitchen took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of the Dartmouth game, before southpaw Lou Colabello pitched the squad to a 6-1 win over BU to secure the team's spot at the College World Series.
In part behind another tremendous performance by Kitchen, UMass stunned Southern Illinois in Omaha by a 2-0 score before NYU and Arizona State defeated the then-Redmen to conclude the 1969 season.
Following the special campaign, shortstop Joe DiSarcina along with left fielder Bob Hansen were named All-Americans, while the duo along with three others claimed All-New England recognition and eight were named All-Yankee Conference. Bergquist was also tabbed NCAA District I Coach of the Year.
Members of the 1969 team and their families will be honored Saturday in a special on-field ceremony prior to first pitch.
