AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts junior Stephanie Croke (women's lacrosse), redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro (baseball) and senior Erin Stacevicz (softball) have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, as announced by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee and presented by UMassFive College Credit Union. With the luncheon idle this week, the trio will be recognized on Wed., April 17 at noon in Berkshire Dining Commons. Guest speakers on that day will be senior associate athletic director for sport administration/SWA Kirsten Britton as well as head football coach Walt Bell.
Croke led UMass to a pair of road wins as the Minutewomen stayed unbeaten in league play with victories at Duquesne (April 5; 16-15 OT) and at St. Bonaventure (April 7; 19-8). The junior tallied 12 points with nine goals and three assists while recording five draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. In the win at Duquesne, the midfielder scored four goals, had two assists, four draw controls and a groundball and caused turnover. In the second half, Croke had a pair of key goals in the final 11 minutes and set-up the game-winning goal in overtime. She followed that up with a career-best five goals, an assist, two groundballs, and a caused turnover and one draw control at St. Bonaventure. The 12-point weekend put her over the 50-point mark for the season and the 100-point mark for her career (102).
Shapiro was instrumental in a 3-1 week for Massachusetts as the Minutemen claimed its Beanpot Semifinal game at Boston College (April 2), before the squad took two of three from Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Saint Louis (April 6-7). Shapiro hit .667 for the week with two doubles, a home run and eight RBI, also scoring four times. He opened the Saint Louis series with a two-run, walk-off single and bookended the three-game set with four-hit performances. That included a rubber game win in which he finished just a triple short of the cycle. His six RBI in the finale was a career-high, which included Shapiro's first home run of his career.
Stacevicz tied the single-game program record for hits in a game (5) and added five RBI in a 13-3 win at UConn (April 3) to open up a 4-0 week for the Minutewomen. Stacevicz tripled twice at UConn as UMass finished with 20 hits, one short of tying a 40-year-old program record. The senior finished the week with a .529 average at the plate, opening the La Salle series (April 6-7) with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while recording hits in all three games of the sweep. Her nine hits over the week moved her into fourth on the all-time UMass career hit list (223).
