Minutewomen fall to visiting Colonials at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis dropped the doubles point and split singles en route to a 4-3 loss to George Washington at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen picked up three wins in singles from freshman Jodie Lawrence-Taylor (No. 2), senior Ruth Crawford (No. 3) and sophomore Anna Napadiy (No. 4).
Massachusetts fell to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the loss. George Washington improved to 7-7 on the year and 3-1 in the conference with the win.
The Minutewomen won their No. 3 doubles match, but fell at No. 1 and No. 2 as the Colonials took a one-point lead into singles.
Crawford teamed with Ashley Avery for a 6-3 victory over Victoria Kogan and Xenia De Luna at No. 3. However, Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu downed Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi at No. 1 and Sara Grubac and Katarina Marinkovikj bested Napadiy and Lawrence-Taylor.
In singles, Lawrence-Taylor won her No. 2 match over Grubac comfortably with a 6-4, 6-2 final. In contrast, Crawford had to battle through an extended match at No. 3 for her three-set win. After Crawford won the opening set, 7-5 she dropped the second set, 6-0 as the match went to its decisive third set. In the finale, Crawford bested her competition 7-5 for the match win.
Napadiy gave the Minutewomen their third singles win when she downed De Luna 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Minutewomen immediately return to action with a Sun., March 31 with a 1 p.m. match against Saint Joseph's (1-11, 1-4 Atlantic 10) at the Bay Road Tennis Club.
