Minutemen claim three victories in outdoor season opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – University of Massachusetts men's track & field placed third in a field of 13 teams at Bryant's Black & Gold Invitational on Saturday. UMass, which secured 96 points on the day, was behind Rhode Island (190) and Brown (101.5) in the team standings.

The Maroon and White picked up the top two marks in the 10,000 meter run, with junior Kendall Westhoff (31:14.76) tabbing first and senior Michael Famiglietti (31:42.72) following in second place. Making his outdoor collegiate debut, freshman Joshua Rahn claimed the top spot in the 5,000 meter run at 15:22.36. The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Colin Stoddard, junior Jacob Gore, junior Nicholas Santos and senior Andrew Hanwell led the Minutemen to a third-place effort and a mark of 3:23.96.

Around the field, junior Mason Lord won the pole vault after clearing 14 feet, 7.25 inches and senior Nathan Adeyemi was second in the triple jump (46 feet, 4 inches),. Senior Evan Burton secured eight points for the Minutemen with a second-place throw in the discus (159 feet, 6 inches) and classmate John Long finished third in the javelin (189 feet, 5 inches).

UMass now turns its attention to the Sat., April 6 Minutemen Invitational, which begins at 10 a.m. from the UMass Track & Field Complex.
