No. 3/2 UMass Falls To Boston College, 3-0 In Hockey East Semifinals

March 23, 2019 | Hockey

The Minutemen will learn their NCAA Regional destination when the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship bracket is announced on Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.

BOSTON – Top-seeded No. 3/2 University of Massachusetts hockey was eliminated from the Hockey East Tournament on Friday night, falling to No. 7 seed Boston College ,3-0, in its semifinal matchup at TD Garden. The loss leaves UMass' record at 28-9-0 as the squad awaits its NCAA Regional destination next weekend,, while the Eagles improve to 14-21-3 and advance to the Hockey East Championship to face Northeastern.

"Very discouraging," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Honestly one of the poorer games we've played this year, and a big part of that is how well BC played. I thought they had a very strong game plan, they competed hard and we didn't. Again, not many nights this year that I can say that we got out-competed. It would've been nice to get out of the first period without that late goal and get them going for the second period, but that late goal was crucial. I thought Joe Woll played extremely well for them, and Boston played very well. We're fortunate to have our team play so well all year and tonight we didn't bring our usual standard."

With 12 seconds remaining in the first period, Boston College forward Logan Hutsko took advantage of a UMass turnover behind the net and was able to find David Cotton who jammed home the tally on the right post. It was Cotton's 22nd goal of the season and sent the Eagles into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

BC carried the one-goal advantage through the middle frame, and with 7:24 remaining in the third, expanded the margin to 2-0. Chris Grando drove the puck past Minutemen netminder Filip Lindberg from the slot after collecting a pass from JD Dudek on a 2-on-1.

Julius Mattila later completed the scoring with a 180-foot empty net goal at the 19:22 mark to seal the 3-0 victory for the Eagles.

UMass finished the night with a 36-32 advantage in shots on goal and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Boston College was 0-for-3. Lindberg stopped 29 shots for the Minutemen, while his counterpart Woll earned the shutout with 36 saves.

UMass will learn its NCAA tournament destination this Sunday, March 24, when the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship bracket will be announced at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
