Duquesne Second Half Rally Hands Men's Hoops 80-73 Road Loss

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne used an 18-to-5 second-half run bolstered by four straight three pointers to hand the UMass basketball team an 80-73 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Palumbo Center. Rashaan Holloway and Jonathan Laurent each posted double-doubles for the Minutemen, while Carl Pierre led UMass with 15 points.
Massachusetts (10-19, 3-13 A-10) will return to action on Wednesday, March 6 against Richmond (7 PM, NESN) at the Mullins Center. The game will be Senior Night for the Minutemen who will honor Holloway prior to the game.
Holloway posted his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out late in the second half. Laurent had a career-high 13 rebounds to go with 13 points with the duo becoming the first Minutemen to have double-doubles in the same game since Cady Lalanne and Trey Davis did so against Saint Joseph's in 2015. Pierre's 15 points were highlighted by four three pointers while he also snagged a career-high tying five rebounds and added two assists. Unique McLean also reach double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Duquesne (19-10, 10-6 A-10) was led by a game-high 30 points from Tavian Dunn-Martin who hit seven three pointers. Michael Hughes had 17 points, while Eric Williams, Jr., notched 12 points. Marcus Weathers rounded out the top scorers with 10 points.
UMass led for the bulk of the game including by as many as 11 at the 5:50 mark of the first half. Duquesne scored seven straight to close out the opening stanza cutting the Minutemen's lead to 34-32 at the intermission.
The Minutemen stretched the lead back to double figures on a triple by Sy Chatman seven minutes into the second half, but Duquesne managed to whittle the lead back down to two, 53-51, on a lay-up by Williams.
Five straight points by Laurent pushed the lead back up to seven as the teams continued trading baskets after that. After a Laurent lay-up at the 7:17 mark pushed the lead back to nine, 63-54, the Dukes started to get hot from beyond the arc.
The 18-to-5 run featured four consecutive three pointers for the Dukes including three from Dunn-Martin and a Williams lay-up with 3:31 to go capped the stretch giving Duquesne a 72-68 lead.
Pierre ended the run with a three-pointer to pull UMass within one, but Duquesne dug in defensively with a blocked shot, a defensive rebound and then a forced turnover before scoring back-to-back buckets to go up 76-71 with 33 seconds to go. UMass fouled to extend the game down the stretch, but could only manage two free throws in the final possessions of the day.
For the game, UMass hit 22-of-57 field goals including six three pointers while going 17-of-27 free throws. Duquesne shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor while going 10-of-20 from beyond the arc and 22-of-36 at the charity stripe. The Minutemen held a 49-to-24 rebounding advantage including 20 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points. The Dukes, however, negated that advantage turning 19 UMass miscues into 27 points.
