Six Minutemen Named Hockey East All-Stars

Makar, Chaffee, Leonard, Pritchard, Del Gaizo and Ferraro all recognized by the league’s head coaches.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has collected a program-record six accolades as senior Jacob Pritchard, sophomores Mitchell Chaffee, Mario Ferraro, John Leonard and Cale Makar, and freshman Marc Del Gaizo have all been selected to the Hockey East All-Star teams, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Makar and Chaffee earned first-team spots, Leonard and Pritchard landed on the second-team and Del Gaizo and Ferraro were third-team honorees.
Makar, the league's only unanimous selection, totaled 30 points in 24 Hockey East games on eight goals and 21 assists, ranking second in points per-game (1.25) and first in plus-minus (+21). He was recognized as Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week three times this season, Player of the Week twice and was the Hockey East Player of the Month in October 2018. Overall, the Calgary, Alberta native leads the Minutemen in scoring with 46 points through 36 games and broke UMass' single-season records for points by a defenseman and assists by a defenseman. He is currently tied for third in program history for single-season assists, as well, with 31, and is top-10 for single-season points. Hockey East's current overall points leader is sixth in the nation in points per-game (1.28), fifth in assists per-game (0.86), second in defenseman scoring and tied for third in plus-minus (+30). As a freshman in 2017-18, Makar was a Hockey East Third-Team All-Star and an All-Rookie Team selection.
Chaffee, the 2018-19 Hockey East Scoring Champion, totaled 31 points over 23 league contests for an average of 1.35 points per-game. The Rockford, Michigan native also led Hockey East in assists in league play with 22, to go along with his nine goals. Overall, he has 41 points to his credit over 35 games on a team-high 17 goals with 24 assists and a plus/minus rating of +22. Chaffee ranks third overall in Hockey East in points, tied for second in goals, tied for seventh in assists, tied for sixth in power-play points (14), tied for fourth in power-play goals (6), tied for fourth in game-winning goals (4) and fifth in plus/minus. He has 12 multi-point games to his credit through 35 contests.
Leonard finished third in Hockey East action in scoring behind Chaffee and Makar with 29 points, an average of 1.26 per-game. His 11 goals were good for third, while 18 assists tied him for fifth in league play. He ranked tied for fifth in power-play points (18) and tied for third in power-play goals (5), as well. Overall, he is tied for sixth in points (36), ninth in assists (23), third in power-play points (17) and tied for fourth in power-play goals (4). The Amherst, Massachusetts native was chosen as the Hockey East Player of the Week on Oct. 29 after logging a goal and five assists in the opening weekend of league play.
In his first season with the Minutemen after graduate transferring from St. Lawrence, Pritchard has enjoyed a career year in his final collegiate campaign, currently second for the Minutemen and overall in Hockey East in scoring with 45 points in 36 games. He ranks eighth nationally in points per-game (1.25), is tied for seventh nationally in assists per-game (0.81) and is tied for first in the nation in power play points with 24 (7g, 17a). He finished fourth in Hockey East scoring with 28 points, tied for third in goals (11), tied for seventh in assists (17) and tied for first in power-play goals (6). The Macomb, Michigan native is currently sixth in program history for assists in a single season with 29 to his credit.
Del Gaizo, a Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, became the first rookie defenseman in Hockey East history to score 10 goals in league play, which ties him for fifth overall on the Hockey East list for goals by a defenseman in a single season. He totaled 17 points in 24 league games (10g, 7a) and was +18, including four power-play goals and one game-winner. Overall, through 36 contests Del Gaizo has 26 points, a UMass record for freshmen defensemen, on 12 goals and 14 assists. The Basking Ridge, New Jersey native is tied with Makar at a league-best +30, ranks fourth in Hockey East in defenseman scoring, tied for fifth in freshman scoring and is in the top-10 in power-play goals (6, t-fourth) and power-play points (13, eighth). He was selected as the Hockey East Rookie of the week on Jan. 7 after a four-point effort in the Minutemen's 6-1 win over American International.
Ferraro, a 2017-18 Hockey East All-Rookie Team honoree, logged nine points (2g, 7a) in 24 league games. Overall, he has 12 points in 36 contests on two goals and 10 assists and is +10. The King City, Ontario native helped UMass limit its opponents to 2.12 goals per-game in Hockey East play, good for second in the league, and 2.06 goals per-game overall, which ranks eighth nationally.
