Minutewomen run win streak to six straight with fourth road victory
CHARLESTON, S.C. - University of Massachusetts tennis defeated the College of Charleston, 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon on the strength of the doubles point and singles wins from senior Ruth Crawford, sophomore Anna Napadiy and freshman Jodie Lawrence-Taylor. The victory improved Massachusetts to 8-2 overall on the year and extended the team's current win streak to six consecutive matches. The College of Charleston fell to 7-7 overall with the home loss.
The Minutewomen claimed the doubles point for the sixth match in a row UMass won at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Janja Kovacevic and junior Martina Bocchi downed Christi Woodson and Anastasia Palaska at No. 1 doubles, 6-2 while Crawford and Ashley Avery secured the team point with a 6-4 margin over Eva Nyikos and Sarah Zschunke. Lawrence-Taylor and Napadiy led their No. 2 doubles match, 5-3, over Lily LaBiche and Clara Errard when play was halted.
Napadiy posted the first singles win of the day as she bested Errard at No. 5 by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Crawford then extended the team's advantage of three matches with her win at No. 3, during which Crawford claimed the first set, 6-2, and took the second set, 7-5.
Catalina Medici gave the College of Charleston its lone match victory of the day when Medici won 6-3, 6-2 over freshman Jasmin Tripathy in the No. 6 spot.
However, Lawrence-Taylor sealed Massachusetts' sixth consecutive victory and eighth overall on the year with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Nyikos at No. 2 singles shortly thereafter.
The Minutewomen return to the College of Charleston's courts for a neutral-site meeting with Richmond (5-3 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) at 10 a.m. It marks the first conference match-up for the year for UMass.
