Minutemen Take Down Atlantic 10 Leader Davidson, 54-51

Carl Pierre led the way with a game-high 23 points while Keon Clergeot hit the game-winning three with five seconds left.
AMHERST, Mass. – Keon Clergeot knocked down the biggest shot of the night with just under five seconds remaining, connecting on a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the eventual game-winning bucket as the Minutemen picked up a 54-51 win over Atlantic 10 leader Davidson on Saturday afternoon in the Mullins Center. Carl Pierre led all scorers with 23 points for the Minutemen (9-15 Overall, 2-9 Atlantic 10) while Clergeot finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Pierre started the day a perfect 5-of-5 from range, giving UMass a bit of momentum to open the second half with his fourth triple after a baseline slam that put the Minutemen ahead by four points. The sophomore connected again from range with just under 10 remaining to end an 8-0 Davidson (17-6 Overall, 8-2 Atlantic 10) scoring run that saw the visitors take a 41-38 lead. Pierre finished the game 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from deep as he finished just two points shy of tying his career-high.
Davidson made 7-of-11 shots from the field to open the second half while giving them a lead after falling behind by five points, including a 6-of-7 stretch to give them a four-point lead before cooling off on their way to shooting 41-percent in the final 20 minutes. Jon Axel Gudmundsson led the Wildcats with 17 points and six rebounds.
Samba Diallo's lone 3-pointer of the day and fourth of the season proved to be another huge shot for the Minutemen as the freshman knocked down the shot from the corner off a Clergeot assist to give UMass a 51-49 lead with 1:36 left. Diallo finished with six points while tying for the game-high in rebounds with seven along with teammates Djery Baptiste and Unique McLean.
The Minutemen came out after the opening tip and built themselves an 11-5 lead after a 7-0 run, capped off by a UMass possession that was extended after multiple rebounds on the offensive glass. UMass grabbed seven offensive boards in the first 11 minutes of play, including another that led to a Rashaan Holloway layup to bring the Minutemen within three at 20-17 after Davidson used an 8-0 run to eventually take a seven-point lead.
Pierre tied it up with one of his two first half 3-pointers with five minutes left in the half prior to a Curtis Cobb floater in the lane to put the Minutemen ahead 22-20 on their way to taking a two-point lead into the locker room at halftime. UMass held a 21-14 advantage on the glass in the opening half on its way to finishing with a 36-to-27 rebound advantage with 13 offensive rebounds.
UMass heads back out on the road for its next two contests, beginning the road trip with a matchup at George Mason in Fairfax, Va. on Wednesday evening.
