Minutemen Come Up Short To George Mason In Overtime Battle, 80-75

Carl Pierre scored a career-high 26 points in a contest that experienced 15 lead changes and eight ties.
FAIRFAX, Va. – Carl Pierre set a new career-high with 26 points as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team came up just short in overtime on the road Wednesday to George Mason, 80-75. UMass (9-16 Overall, 2-10 Atlantic 10) rallied back twice from down four points in overtime to eventually make it a one-point game with under 20-seconds remaining before George Mason (15-10 Overall, 9-3 Atlantic 10) closed out the game shooting 11-of-13 from the line in overtime.
Pierre helped UMass take an 8-3 advantage early with five of his game-high 10 first half points before George Mason answered back with a scoring run to tie it up at 8-8 heading into the under-12 media timeout. The score was tied up four times in the opening 20 minutes of a contest that experienced 15 lead changes and eight ties.
UMass took its largest lead of the night with 4:22 left in the opening half, putting together a quick 6-0 run that opened with a Rashaan Holloway layup and ended with a Pierre baseline drive for the score to put the Minutemen up 25-17. Holloway provided a spark off the bench in the half as he scored six points and added four boards in seven first half minutes.
The Patriots went on to tie things up at 26-26 heading into the locker room as the home squad was held to just 34.6-percent shooting from the field while the Minutemen shot 40-percent in the half. George Mason carried the momentum into the second half, jumping ahead 32-26 to force a UMass timeout.
Samba Diallo capped off another scoring run for UMass, this a 6-0 burst to tie it up at 35-35 on a layup from the freshman just before the under-16 media timeout. Diallo hauled in eight rebounds at the half and finished with a tied for career-high 12 boards to go along with eight points.
A back-and-forth ending to the second half saw the Minutemen regain the lead at 53-52 after a Holloway hook shot and a Unique McLean put back slam. Tre Wood scored all of his career-high 13 points in the second half and in overtime, including five straight before a solid defensive possession that ended with a Pierre steal and score at the other end to give the Minutemen a 60-56 lead with just over a minute remaining. Wood also ended the night with a game-high and tied for career-high eight assists with four steals.
George Mason ended regulation with back-to-back buckets on their final two possessions to take the game to overtime for the third time in the last four meetings between the two teams at 60-60 as a Keon Clergeot 3-pointer with seconds remaining in regulation. The Patriots took a four-point lead with 3:06 left in overtime before a barrage of Minuteman 3-pointers from Pierre and Clergeot made it a two-point game with 33-seconds left on the clock.
After the Patriots stretched their lead back to four points, Pierre answered again with his sixth and final 3-pointer of the night to make it a one point game at 75-74 with 18-seconds remaining. George Mason made just three of their final five attempts from the line to ice the game as they connected on 27-of-37 attempts from the stripe on the night.
McLean ended the night with nine rebounds for the Minutemen while Clergeot added 12 points for a UMass squad that shot 55-percent from the field in the final 25 minutes of play.
The Minutemen return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for a road matchup at George Washington before heading back home to the Mullins Center to take on Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Feb. 23.
