Leidel’s Double-Double Powers Minutewomen Over Duquesne, 69-66
February 07, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Massachusetts uses strong third quarter and just three second half turnovers to secure key victory
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Hailey Leidel's fifth career double-double performance (16 points, 10 rebounds) highlighted three double-digit scorers as University of Massachusetts women's basketball snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-66 win over Duquesne at the Mullins Center Thursday night. Following the win, UMass is 12-11 on the season and 4-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the Dukes drop to 11-11 and 5-4 against league foes.
Senior Jessica George chipped in 11 points and junior Vashnie Perry matched that total in the victory. Making her return to the starting lineup, sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey had nine points and seven rebounds and freshman Destiney Philoxy recorded her first start as a Minutewoman, netting nine points. Leidel's night moved the co-captain to 1,241 career points–an even 50 from tying Jasmine Watson (2009-13) for 10th on the UMass all-time scoring list (1,291).
A back-and-forth first half saw six lead changes before Duquesne claimed a nine-point advantage heading into halftime ahead by a 34-25 advantage. Senior Genesis Rivera provided Massachusetts an early spark with five first quarter points as the Minutewomen jumped out to a lead of as much as seven. It was a difficult shooting second quarter for UMass however, as the squad was held to just 3-of-14 from the field at the same time that the Dukes closed the half on a 7-0 run.
The tides turned in Massachusetts' favor with a third quarter in which the Minutewomen did not commit a single turnover–all the while forcing six by the Dukes and turning that figure into 16 points. A 14-3 UMass run spearheaded by George (seven points) powered the Maroon and White to a margin of 11 in the final seconds of the period.
The visitors would not go down quietly as the Dukes strung together a 10-2 run in the fourth, chipping away and getting within six points. UMass would go back ahead by nine after freshman Jessica Nelson converted a three-point play with 3:38 left, but Duquesne heated up from beyond the arc and got as close as 67-66 with 25 seconds left in regulation. Leidel confidently went to the free throw line with 23 seconds and sank both shots to seal the victory.
Massachusetts finished the night with just 12 turnovers and a season-high 21 offensive rebounds, holding a 40-28 overall edge on the glass.
For Duquesne, Chassidy Omogrosso was outstanding over the entire 40 minutes with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, dishing out six assists. Amanda Kalin had 17 points plus six rebounds and Laia Sole contributed four blocks in the loss.
The Minutewomen return to action against Rhode Island on Sun., Feb. 10 with the team's annual Play4Kay game in support of raising awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the Mullins Center as UMass tangles with the Rams. UMass will be sporting pink uniforms and a number of other special promotions and ceremonies will be taking place both prior to and in-game.
