Quick Hits
- No. 2 University of Massachusetts hockey countered every Boston University surge and used a three-goal third period to outlast the Terriers, 7-5 last Friday at Agganis Arena.
- The win marked the Minutemen's 20th of the season as the squad improves to 20-5-0, 12-3-0 in league action, the third time in program history that UMass has won 20 games or more (21 wins in 2006-07 and 20 wins in 1993-94).
- The tone of the evening was set with senior Jacob Pritchard opening the scoring just 46 seconds into the contest on a cross-ice feed from sophomores John Leonard and Philip Lagunov.
- The Terriers countered with a goal from Ryan Cloonan at the 6:20 mark to tie things at one, but the Minutemen responded with a pair of tallies to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Off a faceoff win by sophomore Jake Gaudet, freshman Bobby Trivigno tipped home a Cale Makar shot from the point 8:30 into the stanza. Marc Del Gaizo's shot from the point from Kurt Keats found its way pat BU goaltender Jake Oettinger at the 15:58 mark.
- BU took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play opportunity midway through the second with a goal by Joel Farabee, tucked under netminder Matt Murray at 10:47, while Patrick Curry, set up by Farabee pulled the Terriers level with UMass, 3-3, 15:47 into the period.
- Lagunov put the Minutemen back on top before the close of the frame, though, finishing off a feed from Leonard at the post at 16:36.
- Boston University once again tied the score with Curry's second of the night, 3:33 into the third, which brought the score to 4-4.
- However, freshman Ty Farmer responded with the next two tallies for UMass, going to the net on the rush to finish off a feed from Trivigno and sophomore Mitchell Chaffee at 8:49, and later burring a breakaway at 17:45.
- Logan Cockerill brought the Terriers back to within a goal at 6-5 with 1:31 to play in regulation but Leonard was tripped up while driving towards the empty net and was awarded the Minutemen's seventh and final score of the night at 19:45.
- UMass edged BU in shots, 34-33 and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Terriers were 1-for-4. Murray made 28 saves in his 16th win of the year (16-3-0) for the Minutemen.
- Farmer's two tallies marked his first multi-goal game of his career and second multi-point game of the season. He went on to earn both Hockey East Rookie of the Week and UMass Student-Athlete of the Week accolades for his performance.
- Leonard's three-point effort (1g, 2a) tied a single game career best, his eighth multi-point game of the year. Trivigno and Lagunov both had multi-point nights, as well, with a goal and an assist apiece.
