#3/2 Hockey Completes Sweep of BC With 4-2 Win

February 16, 2019 | Hockey

Pritchard contributes a goal and an assist for the Minutemen to reach 100 points for his career.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After trailing at the first intermission for a second straight night, No. 3/2 University of Massachusetts hockey used a three-goal second period to defeat Boston College, 4-2 at Kelley Rink on Saturday. With the win, the Minutemen complete the series sweep of the Eagles (10-16-3, 9-7-3 HEA) and tie a program record with their 15th Hockey East victory of the season, sitting at 23-6-0 overall and 15-4-0 in league play.

"I thought tonight was an excellent road game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We executed our game plan well, guys played well without the puck and we found ways to score goals. We have some gifted offensive players. I really liked the way we played defensively; to kill off a 5-on-3 in the third period on the road is not easy to do. I'm very proud of my team tonight. I think everybody was waiting for us to get to this part of our schedule. We swept BU a couple weekends ago and now to sweep BC, it's quite a statement for our program."

Boston College struck first, 11:16 into the contest, when Christopher Brown skated the puck into the UMass zone and dropped it off to Graham McPhee for the tally. Marc McLaughlin picked up an assist on the play, as well.

Then the Minutemen opened the second period with two power-play goals in the first two minutes of the frame. Senior Jacob Pritchard found sophomore John Leonard in the slot and Leonard hammed home his 12th of the season at the 42-second mark.

Just 1:08 later, once again with the man advantage, Jake Gaudet won a battle for the puck behind the Eagles' goal and sent in out to sophomore Oliver Chau for the tally at the doorstep that gave UMass a 2-1 lead.

Pritchard increased the advantage to 3-1, ripping a tough-angle shot past Joseph Woll for his 100th career point, 12:04 into the period. Leonard collected the assist to post his 16th career multi-point game.

Boston College took one of the goals back before the close of the stanza with McPhee logging his second of the night on the power play from Brown and JD Dudek at 13:56.

UMass went on to seal the win with an empty net goal by Gaudet, set up by Chaffee and junior Niko Hildenbrand 19:40 into the third.

The Minutemen finished with a 31-25 edge in shots and went 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Eagles were 1-for-5. Sophomore Matt Murray totaled 23 saves, logging his 18th win of the season, while Woll stopped 27 between the pipes for BC.

UMass will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 21, when the squad will host UConn in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Mullins Center.
