Men’s Track & Field’s Cuthbert Breaks 200 Meter Record

The junior took down a 21-year-old record at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Michael Cuthbert's record-breaking performance in 200 meter dash highlighted Saturday's action for University of Massachusetts men's track and field. Cuthbert was among the contingent of Minutemen running at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational while others from the squad competed down at the University of Rhode Island's Coaches Tribute meet.
 
Cuthbert took fifth in 200 meter dash at 21.44 seconds, breaking a 21-year-old record of 21.46 seconds set by Scott Price in 1998.
 
At the URI Coaches Tribute, Senior Evan Burton won weight throw with a personal record toss of 57 feet, 9.5 inches, good for fourth al-time in the program's record book, while sophomore Coston O'Brien was fifth at 52 feet. Burton also finished eighth in shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 6.75 inches.
 
In pole vault junior Mason Lord claimed second at 15 feet, 3 inches and senior Jonathan Collins followed in third, clearing 14 feet, 2.5 inches.
 
Senior Myles McDermott placed second in long jump at 21 feet, 0.75 inches. In triple jump, senior Nathan Adeyemi leapt 45 feet, 2.5 inches to second and sophomore Samuel Darkwa, Jr. captured fifth at 42 feet, 11.5 inches.
 
Rounding out UMass' top performances in the field events, Collins cleared 6 feet, 2.75 inches for fourth in high jump and freshman Andrew Pondiscio was fifth at 6  feet, 0.75 inches.
 
Jordan Howard was the runner up in 60 meter dash at 7.03 seconds, followed by Hayden Gray in third (7.11). Howard also collected third in 200 meter dash with a time of 22.61 seconds.
 
Junior Noah Kortkamp finished fourth in 60 meter hurdles at 8.57 seconds.
 
The Minutemen will be idle next weekend, returning to action at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Fairfax, Virginia, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24.
