Tennis Opens Big Green Invite With Six Match Victories

Minutewomen claim four singles, two doubles wins
HANOVER, N.H. - University of Massachusetts tennis claimed six victories during the first day of the Big Green Invitational, hosted by Dartmouth College on Friday, including four in singles action and two more during doubles play. The victories came over opposition from all three additional teams participating in the tournament, including four versus St. John's and one each over the host-Big Green and Yale.
Massachusetts played five singles matches against St. John's, and took home wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.
Martina Bocchi won at No. 3 with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Camila Ordonez while Jovana Bogicevic and Ashley Avery added dominant performances at No. 4 and No. 5. Bogicevic claimed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph versus Gabriela Tenorio and Avery downed Jenelle Downer, 6-2, 6-3.
Janja Kovacevic also won her singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 margin over Dartmouth's Ashley Hess.
In doubles, UMass claimed one win over St. John's and another against Yale.
Bocchi and Anna Napadiy bested the Tenorio and Oceane Garibal pairing from St. John's comfortably by a score of 6-2. Avery and Shiran Arol Wiegand worked through a narrow triumph over Yale's Kathy Wang and Lauren Gillinov with a 7-6 (4) outcome.
Massachusetts continues its weekend at the Big Green Invitational on Sat., Nov. 2 with its second day of matches.
